      <image:title>Projects - Herbarium of Photographic Emulsions</image:title>
<image:caption>These anthotypes photograms are made to document the photosensitive properties of native plants on the Ards Peninsula. Anthotype refers to a photographic process that uses photosensitive extracts from plants and UV exposure from the sun to create prints. I have made photosensitive emulsions from plants that I foraged on the land where I live, and I applied the emulsions on cotton rag paper. I also pressed cuttings of the plants, enabling me to create anthotype prints of the plant that was used to make the emulsion. For example, the anthotype print of clover was made with clover emulsion. These prints are part of an ongoing project by the artist to create a kind of photographic herbarium documenting local plant life. This series was on display as part of a solo exhibition at the Ards Art Centre in September 2023. You can buy a hand-stitched first edition of the resulting book via The Library Project.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Cyanobacteria</image:title>
<image:caption>Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, has plagued Lough Neagh in recent years. Lough Neagh is located in Northern Ireland. It is the largest fresh water lake across both the UK and Ireland, and it supplies over 40% of Northern Ireland’s drinking water. Lough Neagh is experiencing an environmental crisis due to the proliferation of cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, as a result of pollution runoff from industrial and agricultural practices. These algal blooms are highly toxic and harmful to wildlife, domestic animals, and people. In an artistic response to this crisis, I photographed wildlife around Lough Neagh on 35mm film. Prior to development, I souped the film in water from Lough Neagh which was contaminated with cyanobacteria. As a result of this process, the film developed spots where the emulsion was eaten away. I then digitally scanned the film, printed it negatives on acetate, and printed the images through cyanotype. Using cyanotype to make these images is both a nod to the cyanobacteria which is the subject of this work, as well as an attempt to jar the viewer by using an otherworldly blue hue to depict the natural world. See the following resources for more information about blue-green algae at Lough Neagh: Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs, Lough Neagh Partnership, Queen’s University Belfast research project, and 2023 NI Assembly briefing paper.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Projects - Internal Landscapes</image:title>
<image:caption>My partner and I have been working to rewild the land around our house by promoting native plant species and cutting out chemical fertilisers, weedkillers, and pesticides. At the same time, we have been going through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) in order to have a child. In this way, my relationship with the land has become a foil for my relationship with my body. This project is an artistic response to my experience of undergoing IVF treatment. It explores the tension between the natural process of conception and the clinical experience of IVF. To illustrate this tension, I am creating anthotype contact prints of sonograms created during the IVF process. Anthotype printing is a traditional method of photographic printing which uses organic material in the creation of photosensitive emulsions which are exposed in the sun. I am making anthotype emulsions from herbal remedies to treat infertility and the side effects of IVF treatment. I am printing these anthotypes on the patient information leaflets from my IVF medications. This project was supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s Support for Individual Artists Programme (SIAP). __________________ Ovitrelle: To release eggs from ovaries Lady’s Mantle: To promote conception IVF Round 1, Scan 2: To check follicles prior to egg collection</image:caption>
