Thái Nguyên is a region of Northern Vietnam known for its green tea production. I had the privilege of following the whole process of tea making from trees to teapot.
What impressed me most was the intimacy of the process. Local families who own plots of tea trees choose which tea production house to work with. I watched as the families came to drop off their sack of hand-picked leaves. They weighted the pickings, and headed home for lunch. Then the husband and wife team who own the tea brand takes over from there. They do the whole drying and crushing process themselves in just 2 big tumble dryers and 8 mechanical crushers.
This small team is one of the highest producing in the region. Observing this process certainly gave me a new-found appreciation for tea.
