Artist Bio: Savannah Dodd

Savannah Dodd, b. 1991, is a photographer and anthropologist. She is a St. Louis native and a current resident of Belfast, Northern Ireland. In 2017 Savannah founded the Photography Ethics Centre.

Savannah is pursuing her PhD in anthropology at Queen's University Belfast. She received her M.A. in anthropology and sociology from the Graduate Institute of International Development Studies in Geneva (2015) and her B.A. in anthropology and religious studies at Washington University in St. Louis (2012). Her work in anthropology explores the nexus between religion, politics, identity, and conflict.

Savannah has had a life-long interest in the arts. Her grandmother, portrait artist Sallie Day Mogerman, ensured that art played a key role in her childhood, from pastels to the potter's wheel.  With her unwavering encouragement, Savannah won her first photography contest at age eleven.

Her photography is heavily influenced by her academic background. Ethics is integral to the way that she works. She places great importance on process, modes of access, and engagement with the people and places she photographs. Her images centre on people, material culture, and the minutiae of everyday life. She often combines the disciplines of anthropology and photography to produce visual ethnography.
